Where the transition stands
DIA’s current guidance says the Online Casino Gambling Act came into force on 1 May 2026. Providers already serving New Zealand before that date may continue until 1 December 2026 under the transitional position. This is not the same as holding a newly issued New Zealand online casino licence.
The regulator describes a process involving up to 15 operators gaining the right to apply, with licences expected from early 2027. Its official updates, rather than an offshore licensing badge, are the right place to check the next stage.
Why this page is informational
DIA states that online casino advertising is prohibited during this period. We are not publishing a list of offshore casino recommendations, signup links or welcome offers in the New Zealand edition. A brand’s availability in another country does not establish its New Zealand status.
Questions to take to an official source
Check the date of the guidance, whether a provider is on any applicable official register, what player protections apply and how complaints are handled. Currency labels and a familiar website name do not answer those questions.
Read DIA information for online casino customers and DIA guidance for advertisers. Checked 18 October 2026.
Is a transitional provider already licensed under the new system?
Not necessarily. Continuing during a transitional period and receiving a licence are different things.
Are demo credits money?
No. Demo credits are a practice balance and cannot be withdrawn.
