Positive and negative American odds
A positive price tells you the potential profit on a $100 stake; a negative price tells you the stake needed for $100 in potential profit. Smaller or larger stakes scale proportionally. DraftKings’ odds explainer describes this format. The examples below are calculations, not betting recommendations.
| Example | Stake | Profit if it wins | Total return if it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| +150 | $20 | $30 | $50 |
| -150 | $30 | $20 | $50 |
| -110 | $11 | $10 | $21 |
Profit excludes the original stake. Total return includes it. A losing cash bet normally loses its stake, subject to the specific market’s settlement rules. Bonus-bet terms can treat the stake differently, so do not use a cash-bet example as a promotion calculation.
Implied probability
For a positive price, divide 100 by the odds plus 100. At +150: 100 ÷ 250 = 40%. For a negative price, divide its absolute value by that value plus 100. At -150: 150 ÷ 250 = 60%. These are break-even probabilities implied by the quoted prices, not proof of the event’s true chance.
Why the sportsbook margin matters
Imagine a two-outcome market with both sides priced at -110. Each side implies about 52.38%; together they total about 104.76%. That total above 100% illustrates the built-in pricing margin. Comparing prices can clarify the terms of a bet, but it does not identify a certain winner.
Moneyline versus point spread
A moneyline generally asks which side wins, with the exact settlement conditions stated in the market. A point spread adds a handicap. For example, a team at -3.5 must win by at least four points to cover that spread; a team at +3.5 can lose by three and still cover. The price, such as -110, is separate from that handicap. Sport-specific ties, overtime and cancellation rules still matter.
Before submitting a bet
Check the selection, stake, price, potential return and market rules on the actual bet slip. Odds may move before acceptance. Confirm state eligibility on the sports betting page, and keep spending inside a limit you chose before the session. The soccer score feed may be delayed and is not a guaranteed betting signal.
