Confirm the poker product

In player-to-player online poker, players compete for pots under the room’s rules and fee structure. Video poker is a casino game played against a paytable. Casino hold’em and similar table games are also different from a poker room. A website offering a game with “poker” in its name does not automatically offer peer-to-peer cash games or tournaments.

Your state, room and player pool

Online casino authorization does not mean that an active online poker room is available. Check the current state regulator list and the operator’s product-specific terms. Minimum age, identity checks, physical location and exclusion requirements still apply. An interstate player-sharing agreement does not make every poker brand available in every participating state.

Cash games and tournaments

Cash-game chips represent the money at the table under the applicable rules; blinds and fees are stated in the lobby. In a tournament, an entry buys participation under a defined structure. Tournament chips are not a withdrawable balance, and a larger stack does not promise a cash prize. Read the blind schedule, payout structure, late-registration rules and entry fees before joining.

Start with the rules, not a promised return

Our Texas hold’em rules guide explains hole cards, the flop, turn, river and hand construction. Knowing the rules helps you understand a decision; it does not remove the risk of losing. Keep a session budget separate from essential spending and do not increase it to recover a loss.

Reading a room’s current terms

Check the exact state-facing website and contracting company.
Confirm active peer-to-peer poker, rather than relying on a general casino permission.
Read fees, seating restrictions, identity requirements and prohibited software rules.
Check disconnection, tournament cancellation and complaint procedures.

Social or promotional poker uses a different model. A play-money lobby does not prove that real-money poker is authorized in your state.
