Fractional and decimal odds, explained in euro

Translate a familiar fractional price into a cash return and an implied probability. Check market conditions before treating any number as a payout.

What 5/2 means

Fractional odds compare potential profit with stake. At 5/2, a winning €8 cash stake would make €20 profit: 8 × 5 ÷ 2. Adding the original €8 gives €28 total return. The equivalent decimal price is 3.50, calculated as 5 ÷ 2 + 1.

Why odds-on still involve risk

A price of 1/2 means €1 potential profit for every €2 staked. A winning €12 cash bet would return €18, including the €12 stake. The equivalent decimal price is 1.50. A short price offers a smaller profit relative to stake; it does not guarantee the event or protect the stake.

Turn the price into a percentage

For decimal odds, calculate 100 ÷ price. At 3.50, that is about 28.57%. At 1.50 it is about 66.67%. These are implied break-even probabilities, not independent estimates of the outcome. The prices across a bookmaker’s market can add up to more than 100% because of pricing margin.

Do not mix sportsbook and exchange charges

An exchange may apply commission under its own rules, while an ordinary sportsbook price uses a different charging structure. Check the applicable charge and settlement conditions rather than assuming the gross return is the amount you can withdraw. A free-bet stake can also have a different return rule from cash.

Betfair’s primary odds guide explains the display formats. Our Irish betting directory supplies separate operator records, not a promised price. Read the promotion-terms guide before applying cash arithmetic to an incentive. The football results feed may be delayed and does not replace market settlement rules.
