What you are trying to make
Two hole cards belong to you; up to five community cards are shared. Use any five of the seven available cards to make your hand. Two players can use the same board cards. If everyone else folds, the remaining player wins the pot without needing to show the strongest hand.
The route to showdown
After the blinds and initial deal comes pre-flop betting. The flop reveals three board cards, the turn a fourth and the river a fifth, with a betting round after each stage. Players still in the hand then reach showdown unless the action has already ended with everyone but one folding.
A kicker can decide a pair
Suppose the board is Q♣ 8♦ 5♠ 3♥ 2♣. You hold Q♦ A♠ and an opponent holds Q♥ J♣. Both have a pair of queens. Your best five cards are Q♣ Q♦ A♠ 8♦ 5♠; your opponent’s are Q♣ Q♥ J♣ 8♦ 5♠. The ace kicker beats the jack. Compare only the cards needed for the best five-card hand, not an eighth imaginary tiebreaker.
Read the betting structure
A call matches the current wager; a raise increases it. A check is available only when there is no wager to call, and a fold gives up the hand. Fixed-limit, pot-limit and no-limit games impose different betting constraints. House rules cover minimum raises, all-ins, disconnections and unusual situations.
