Poker tournaments: fees, re-entry and prize tickets

The entry price is only one part of a tournament. Read the structure, registration window and prize type before comparing events.

Know the total entry cost

A fictional €18 + €2 buy-in costs €20: €18 is allocated to the pool and €2 is a fee if the event uses that breakdown. Some lobbies display a single inclusive figure. Confirm the currency and whether any additional charge applies before comparing two events.

Freezeout and re-entry are different budgets

In a freezeout, elimination normally ends your event. A re-entry tournament may let you buy another starting stack after elimination while registration remains open. An event advertised at €20 can therefore cost €60 if you choose three entries. Set a total-entry limit in advance; a fresh stack does not erase money already spent.

Look beyond the starting chips

Compare the starting stack with the big blind and read the level duration. An 8,000-chip stack at a 200-chip big blind is 40 big blinds. The same stack at a 400-chip big blind is 20. Faster levels mean the structure changes sooner, even though the nominal starting stack is unchanged.

Check cash versus tickets

Satellite prizes can be seats or restricted tickets. Read the destination event, expiry and any rules about exchanging a seat. Tournament chips do not represent a withdrawable euro balance. A prize-pool guarantee describes the event’s stated pool under its conditions, not an individual player’s outcome.

PokerStars explains re-entry, while its tournament rules cover wider event conditions. These references explain formats rather than proving Irish availability. The Irish poker directory identifies product-specific evidence. Use the hold’em rules guide if you need to review betting rounds before reading a tournament structure.
